Hazel has 6 great-grandchildren; Parker Morley, Ryder Swearngin, Brodee Hey, Mei-Mei Senthavy, Emma and Lauryn Rinehart. She is also survived by her brother Donnie Purvis and sister Sharon Kay Brown. She is reunited in heaven with her husband of 32 years Carl Bay Swearngin, her mother, Virginia Purvis, father, Everett Purvis, and sister Sadie Poole.
Hazel was born April 7th, 1927 in Salt Lick, Kentucky. She and her family moved to Platte County in the early 30’s. Hazel attended Platte City High, home of the “Pirates”. She was a cheerleader and played on the basketball team. In her mid twenties she worked as an elevator operator and a telephone operator. She later fell in love with Carl Bay Swearngin while he was working on her family’s tobacco farm and were married on July 19th, 1958. While raising her three sons she worked at the schools they attended, Bancroft Elementary, Westport High School and later West High School holding several positions throughout the years.
Hazel enjoyed reading the Kansas City Star and Bible every morning, and writing in her journal almost every day. She walked her neighborhood daily visiting with people she saw, picking up trash and always taking a four legged friend with her. Her walks frequently included a stop at her favorite thrift store to bring donations and visit. She was an avid stamp enthusiast, and looked forward to volunteering at the Hyde Park Association, her church and community functions. She enjoyed baking, especially brownies, and had some ready for anyone that entered her home. She was known and loved by all her neighbors for over 50 years.
Family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, September 29th at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park Kansas. Funeral services will start at 10:00 am on Thursday, September 30th also at the chapel. Burial will follow in Lincoln, Missouri.
