Hee Kim

My mother was tough as a nail but soft as feather and kind hearted.  She had to be, to live through the tumultuous tragic modern history of Korea. Born during the Japanese occupation of Korea in 1933 in Pyongyang. She lived through the WWII in the latter days of Japanese rule and liberation from it.  She then witnessed the Kim Il Sung take over the North Korea, then the carnage of Korean war.  She with her family escaped North Korea during 1-4 retreat riding on an open train.  She lived through the harsh refuge condition.  I recall her recollection that she cooked the rice using a single cardboard box and never enough to eat as refugee.  Then, though tough and smart determination she became the first graduate of Ewha university’s Mathematic degree.  She later married my father (reverend) , and had three children: Eldest me, younger sister Alice and the youngest Sarah.

She was known as Tiger Teacher at her high school.  She was tough teacher, but also with a soft heart.  She had several of her student to tutor me who were in financially dire situation.  Back then, one had to pay tuition for all schooling in Korea.  So, mom had several poor students as tutors to instruct me to enable them to pay tuition.  I recall accompanying tutors to the bus stop during the late evening after the tutoring was over.

She lived a tough life through the most tragic time in Korean history; however, she overcame the adversities to live life as a teacher, wife of reverend and mother of three.  A simple life against the canvas of tragedies the Korean history, she overcame the odds.  She is at peace and rest now.  She has climbed the Jacob’s ladder.

저의 어머니는 강하고 부드러운 성품을 동시에 소유하신 분이셨읍니다. 어머니는 일제 시데1933 년 태어나 한국에 비극적 역사를 온몸으로 체험하셨읍니다.  유년기에는 일본의 혹독한 지배를 받으며 자랐고 해방 말기에는 제 2 차 세계 대전을 겪어야 했읍니다.. 김일성이 북한을 장악한 후에는 한국 전쟁의 대학살을목격했습니다. 어머니는 가족과 함께 열린 기차를 타고 1-4 후퇴 중 북한을 탈출했습니다. 남하해서 시작된 피난살이는 가혹했읍니다. 저는 어머니가 골판지를 불태워밥을 지었고 언제나 식양이 부족했다고 하셨던 말씀을 기억합니다. 그러나 그런 피난살이 중에서도 강한 의지와 결단력으로 이화대학교 수학과 에 입학하셨고 합업을 마치셨읍니다. 휴전이후 어머니는 숭의 여고에서 수학교사를 하시던중  아버지인 김문수 목사 와 결혼하여저와  여동생 앨리스, 막내 사라 세자녀를 두셨읍니다.

어머니는 재직하시던 학교에서 Tiger Teacher로 알려졌습니다. 그녀는 학생들에게 엄격하지만 한없이 부드러운 마음을 가진 선생님이었습니다.  당시 한국에서는 모든 학생이 등록금을 내야 했읍니다.그녀는 재정적으로 어려운 상황에 처한 학생을 저의 가정교사로 붙여주셨읍니다.  그래서 어머니는 몇몇 가난한 학생들에게 수업료를 낼 수 있도록 그들을 고용했던 것이지요. 저는 과외 공부가 끝난 후 늦은 밤에 버스 정류장에서 어머니와 함께 과외 선생님을 배웅했던 일을 기억합니다.

어머니는 한국 역사의 가장 비극적인 세월을 겪으시고 힘든 삷을 살고 가셨읍니다. 그러나 어머니는 역경을 극복하고 교사, 목사의 아내, 세 아이의 어머니로 사셨읍니다. 어머니는 한국 역사의 비극이라는 캔버스에 맞서 단순한 삶으로 역경을 이겨냈읍니다. 어머니는 지금 편안안 곳에 계십니다. 그녀는 야곱의 사다리를 타고 오르셨읍니다,
