Helen Hope

June 4, 1908 — June 4, 2009

Helen Ann Hope, 101, went to be with Jesus on June 4, 2009. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, June 8, 2009 at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas. Visitation will begin an hour prior to service times in the chapel. Interment in Johnson County Memorial Gardens. The family suggests contributions be made to Grace Hospice, 9333 Ward Pkwy, Suite 201, Kansas City, Missouri 64114 or Emmanuel Baptist Church, 10100 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas 66212.

Helen was born June 15, 1907 in Richmond, Missouri where she resided until high school graduation in 1927. Helen immediately found work in Kansas City, Missouri and moved. Her secretarial career with Mackie Clemens Fuel Co. lasted 34 years. Since 1960 Helen actively served in UDC Dixie Chapter and held national offices as well as presiding as President of Dixie Chapter three different times. She had been a member of Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Kansas City, Missouri, and President of Johnson County Shrine Guild, as well as a member of Past Presidents Club.

Helen was a charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church of Overland Park, Kansas and her first priority was to be present in Sunday School and worship every Sunday until her bout with shingles began in August, 1999. Her love for the Lord and her love of nature went hand in hand. She was known by her neighbors as the flower lady as she enjoyed so many hours nurturing nature’s beauty in her own yard and sharing her flowers with others.

Preceding Helen in death were her husband of 20 years, Earl E. Hope; her parents, Thomas and Ida May Phipps; and her six siblings, Ella Campbell-Worlein, Andrew M. Phipps, Jesse E. Phipps, Mayme Moreland, Opal Phipps, and Katherine McDonald; and one niece, Teresa Davenport.
Survivors include her loving nieces and nephews, A.J. Phipps, Shirley Davies, Gloria Wiss, Gail Phipps, and Sandra French.

Arrangements: D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 913-451-1860.
