Helen Irene Lewis, age 97, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2015 at Delmar Gardens in Overland Park, KS.
Helen was a native Kansan. She was born on August 2, 1918 in Russell, Kansas the eldest of eleven children of James Bridges and Catherine Spaeth. Helen grew up and attended school in Russell. She married William (Bill) Lewis on August 26, 1935. They lived and raised their family in North Kansas City where Helen was active in The North Kansas City Baptist Church and The Friendly Neighbor Extension Club. In 1963, Helen and Bill moved to Overland Park.
Helen loved her church and was an active member of Leawood Baptist for 50+ years. She was involved in Sunday School, Women on Mission, Wyandotte Ministry, banner making and her favorite, Round Table. Besides being an avid reader, Helen was a talented and passionate artist. She was a devoted painter and has been represented in numerous shows, winning several awards and prizes for her work. Helen was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Lewis; her infant son, Billy Ray; sisters Thelma Anker, Ruth Meitler and Mary Lea Pearson and brother Vernon Bridges. She is survived by her son Jim Lewis; daughters Beverly Owen and Judy DeMeese; grandchildren Debbie Wells, Beth Peters, Melissa Owen, Julie Fuller, Jennifer Walmer, Chad and Jason DeMeese; great grandchildren Trevor and Bryan Wells, Joseph and Jackson Peters, Zach, Bayley, Olivia, Fasika, Yidnek and Endi Fuller, Sam and Joe Walmer, Madeline and Chloe DeMeese; siblings Dorothy Dalton, Kathryn Peery, Gordon Bridges, Barbara Heffel, Rae Ellen Steinle and Kenneth Bridges and numerous nieces and nephews.
