Herman C. Spahr of Leawood passed away on January 26, 2008 after a long battle with cancer. His strength, dignity and grace in the face of the daunting challenge of this disease were an inspiration to all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen who also fought cancer. Herm is survived by his wife Audrey, a son Kevin and wife Barb of Cary, IL, daughter Jennifer and husband Dick of Alpharetta, Georgia, daughter Tisha and husband Ian of Crystal Lake, IL and a daughter-in-law Janet of Schaumburg, IL. He also leaves a brother Steve, sister Virginia and his 100 year old mother Josephine Spahr, plus 12 grandchildren. Herm was born in New York City, but grew up in New Jersey. After graduating from Wittenberg University, he spent 39 months in Army Security then went on to receive his MGA from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School. Herm served as a city manager in the Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and Chicago areas. In 1984 Herm and Audrey moved to Leawood. He was the CEO of John Knox Village in Lee's Summit, MO until his retirement in 2001. Herm and Audrey enjoyed many years of sailing and traveling abroad and in the USA.
Visitation will be from 6-8 PM, Tuesday, January 29th at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf. Memorial services will be 11 AM Wednesday at Grace Covenant Presbyterian church, 11100 College Blvd. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to John Knox Village Foundation, 400 N.W.
