Hilda Maxine (Hoke) Metcalf, 96, formerly of Tallmadge, Ohio, made use of her “one way ticket” to Heaven, Tuesday, October 1, 2024 from her earthly residence at Ignite Medical Resorts in Overland Park, Kansas.
Born on January 16, 1928, she was the only daughter of Luther ”Mason” and Edith (Norris) Hoke in Nallen, West Virginia. Her father died in a coal mining accident when “Maxine” was just two months old. At the age of four, her mother married John L. “Ray” Wilson. Maxine lived the first sixteen years of her life in West Virginia. Desiring to make a better living for his family, Ray found employment at Goodyear in Akron, Ohio and moved his family to Tallmadge, Ohio.
Due to her poor health as a child, and the family move, Maxine entered and endeared herself to the 1948 graduating class of Tallmadge High School with whom she stayed in close contact until ill health prevented regular reunions.
In June of 1950, she married her sweetheart Melvin Metcalf. After clerking for a local grocery store for some time, she left that occupation to become a dedicated mother, and embraced a career as a full-time homemaker. She remained so until her son Mark entered high school at which time she added “food service employee” for the Tallmadge School System to her resume’.
Maxine was passionate about her family, her home state of West Virginia, traveling to 49 of the United States, witnessing to others about her faith but most of all her deep devotion to Jesus, her Savior.
She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Harold) Carpenter of Overland Park, Kansas and son, Mark (Cindy) Metcalf of Tallmadge, Ohio; grandsons David (Jennifer) Carpenter, Overland Park, Kansas and Daniel Metcalf, Akron, Ohio; granddaughters Charity (Travis) Englund, Bellevue, Nebraska and Marci Metcalf, Tallmadge, Ohio; great-grandsons, Gabriel (Breanna) Carpenter; Mason Carpenter and Dean Carpenter all of Overland Park, Kansas; and great-granddaughters Emma Carpenter, Overland Park, Kansas and Marli Metcalf, Tallmadge, Ohio; as well as a myriad of nephews and nieces.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, of 67 years, her two sisters, Anne Wegner and Joyce Vercamen, and her oldest grandson, Mark Metcalf II.
Known as Mom to her children and their spouses, and Grams to her grand and great-grandchildren, she will be greatly missed, but they anticipate a heavenly family reunion in the future.
A Remembrance Service will be held Sunday, December 1, 2024, at 3:00 pm, at the Overland Park Church of God Holiness, Overland Park, Kansas.
