Hilmer "Whitey" Sundberg

Hilmer “Whitey” A. Sundberg, 91, Leawood, Kansas passed away February 25, 2015 at his home.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1PM, Thursday, March 5, 2015 at Cure of Ars Catholic Church, 9401 Mission Rd., Leawood, Kansas 66206.  Entombment will follow in Johnson County Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Kansas.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to The Sisters, Servants of Mary, 800 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kansas 66102.  Fond memories and condolences for the family may be left at www.johnsoncountychapel.com.
Whitey was born on April 14, 1923 in Fergus Fall, MN to Louis and Meta (Nissen) Sundberg.  He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and participated in WWII, earning a Purple Heart, the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Gold Stars.  He was a proud American and enjoyed sharing his stories about being in the military with his family.  He worked in the steel industry his entire career and was also President of Anchor Steel. Whitey enjoyed hunting and skeet shooting in his spare time, but his family always came first.  He was full of pride when it came to his wife, Joyce, and their family, and spent as much time as he could with them.
Whitey was preceded in passing by his parents; 2 brothers and one sister.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Joyce; daughter, Stephany; son, Kurt and his wife Susan; five grandchildren; and one great granddaughter.
