Hugh Stufflebeam

Former Ottumwa, Iowa, Mayor Hugh A. Stufflebeam, 91, of Overland Park, Kan., formerly of Ottumwa, died at 8:45 p.m. January 20, 2009, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 11, 1917, in West Grove, Iowa, to John A. and Blanche Moore Stufflebeam. He married Dorothy E. Pointer July 25, 1939, in Kirksville, Mo. She preceded him in death on July 13, 2001. He was a graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1936 and of Iowa Success School. He was served as a Fireman, Captain, Fire Inspector and retired as Fire Chief for the Ottumwa Fire Department. He was Mayor of Ottumwa and had worked at the First National Bank in Ottumwa, retiring in 1982. He was a member of First Christian Church where he had served a Deacon, was a member of the Ottumwa Firemen Association, Iowa Association of Professional Firefighters, International Association of Fire Chiefs, was Past Exalted Ruler and life member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge #347, State Vice-President of Southeast Iowa Elks, served as Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of the Southeast Iowa Elks and organized and served as officer of the municipal employees credit union. He had moved from Ottumwa to Lenexa in September of 2007.

Surviving is a daughter Sandra L. Behnke of Overland Park; a son David M. (Rona) Stufflebeam of Rogers, Ark.; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and his wife, Frances Myers Stufflebeam. He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Edward Behnke.

A funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, Wesley Chapel, 13720 Roe Ave., Leawood. Visitation will begin an hour prior to service times. Burial will take place Monday, Jan. 26, in Ottumwa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 301 W.
