Dr. James Dale Bennett

Born October 22, 1913 to Dr. James C. Bennett and Florence Hay in Eskridge, Kansas, James Dale Bennett was an exceptional doctor, a celebrated war hero, and an active member of the Country Club United Methodist Church for over 50 years. Most importantly, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, mentor and role model.
Dr. Bennett served his country as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Medical Corp during the Second World War. He arrived in Normandy on D-Day plus six. Dr. Bennett received a French Medal and a Bronze Star for the battle in Normandy. He retired and later served as a medical officer in the Missouri National Guard. Following the war, Dr. Bennett practiced medicine in Kansas City, Missouri, retiring in 1984 at the age of 70.
Everyone who knew Dr. Bennett felt his kindness, patience, and gentle nature. Dr. Bennett was renowned for his devotion to his patients, spending Sundays making house calls and always being available to those in need. He thought of his patients as friends and treated them as such.
Dr. Bennett was better known by those who loved him as ?Papa?. Papa found happiness in family gatherings at the Lake of the Ozarks and over the holidays. He built a large, close-knit family. Papa passed away on January 14th, 2007. He was surrounded by those he loved and those who loved him during his last days.
Dr. James Dale Bennett is survived by Laura (Sandy) Bennett, his wife of 68 years, his three daughters, Jane Fowler, Lynda Logan and Patricia Glass, his nine grandchildren, Kim Nofsinger, Missy Welch (Whit), Amy Ray, Brent Logan (Kathy), Corbin Logan, Brian Merker (Carrie), Sarah Glass, Adam Merker and Amy Purcell (John), and ten great-grandchildren, and his brother Willis Bennett.
Dr. Bennett?s life will be celebrated with a visitation at 2:00, Tuesday, January 16 at the D.W. Newcomer?s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas, followed by a memorial service at 3:00 at the Chapel.
