He graduated from Louisburg Rural High School in 1959.  After high school he worked at General Motors until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1963.  He would serve one year in Vietnam, returning home in January 1966.  In May of 1966 he would marry Nancy Hershey and remained married to her until his passing. They lived their married life in Overland Park, KS. He became an agent with American Family in 1966 a job that he held proud for over 49 years.  He was the most tenured agent in the state of Kansas and the second most tenured agent in all of American Family.  He was still an active agent with them at the time of his passing.  He passed many milestones in his tenure with American Family.  Along the way he met many friends in the industry.  Some of those friendships would last a lifetime.

His marriage produced two children Suzanne Morse (1974) of Payson, AZ and Michael Donahue (1985) of Overland Park, KS.  Suzanne is a nurse practitioner and owns her own practice in Arizona that has 2 branch locations.  She has one daughter, Shyenne Fowler (1998). His son Mike, has been working in the insurance industry for the past several years.

Every chance he had, he would spend time at the Lake of the Ozarks.  He owned property there since 1980.  He always loved life at the lake.  Through the years he would have many different boats.  He alway enjoyed boating with his family and friends.  Dad also loved going to the gym and working out daily.  He was proud when his grand daughter asked to the gym and work out with him.  He was proud of the body that he developed over the past 30 years.  His grand daughter thought that he had a "rocking body for his age".  He always stayed active and loved living life large.  He loved to be known by JD which also stood for his favorite Jack Daniels.  This summer despite his illness he was able to enjoy one last Lake of The Ozarks Shootout with his children.

He passed the day after Christmas, December 26, 2015 with his children and wife at his bedside after a long, valiant battle with lung cancer.

He is proceeded in death by his parents George and Myrtle Herman.  His half brother George Dennis Herman.
