Jim was born March 14, 1932 in Ayer, Massachusetts to Dr. Edward and Dorothy Hopkins. He practiced Plastic Surgery from 1964-1992, when he had his first heart attack. From 1993-2004 he worked in a disability evaluating position from which he retired in 2004. His extensive schooling included The Groton School in 1950, Wesleyan University in 1954, and Tufts Medical School in 1958. He served his internship and residency in General Surgery at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI and later served his fellowship in Plastic Surgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Throughout his medical career, he worked at most of the area hospitals, including Baptist Medical Center, Research Medical Center, St. Joseph Medical Center and Menorah Medical Center, just to name a few. He was also President of the Metropolitan Medical Society in 1981.
He met his wife, Lisa, when he was 43 years of age. They married when he was 47 and had their first child together when he was 49. Jim loved his family and he was especially proud of his new grandson, Declan James Phillip.
Besides Jim’s passion for his medical career, he also had many outside pastimes. He enjoyed bird watching, collecting music records, and everything sports related. He was a big hockey fan and stayed abreast of the professional tennis circuit because of his son in law’s affiliation with the ATP and his daughter’s affiliation with the WTA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Dr. Bertrand Hopkins and Edward Hopkins, Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa, and children, Jennifer Dent and her husband Taylor, Peter Saing and his wife, Michelle and two grandchildren, Declan Dent and Melora Saing. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. David Hopkins and his wife, Susan; sister-in-law, Betsy Hopkins and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
