James F. Odom, 83, passed away Friday, June 13, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital.
He was a strong man who was totally devoted to his family. One could always count on Jim. His dependability, care taking role, generosity and humor were just a few of his many admirable qualities. Jim was loved by many and was a living example of all that a husband, father and friend should be. Jim grew up in Kansas City, KS and attended Junction Elementary School and Shawnee Mission North High School. He was a World War II veteran, having joined the Navy at the age of eighteen. He worked at Phillips Petroleum for thirty-five years and was a member of The American Legion of Shawnee and Westwood Christian Church. Jim enjoyed all sports, but particularly loved the games of golf and bowling. He was an avid golfer and shot his age at 68, and also scored three holes in one. He was once named Johnson County Senior Bowler of the Year and at the age of 79, bowled a perfect 300 game.
Jim was preceded in death by his grandson, James Kirk Odom, granddaughter, Tammy Cochran and sister-in- law, Irene Renner. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Bernice; son James Larry Odom and wife Cindy, daughter Carol Cochran and husband Mike; sisters Vivian Yaeger and Angie Jacobs, brothers Harry Odom and William Odom; grandchildren Matt Cochran and wife Lisa, Kyle Odom, Courtney Odom and great-grandchildren T.J. Mishler and Maddie Cochran.
A graveside memorial service will be held at Johnson County Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, June 17 at 1:00 P.M.
