James Merle Owens, 66, left us suddenly on April 23, 2012 to answer the summons from his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ to join Him in heaven. Visitation is scheduled on Wednesday at 7-9 PM (family at 6 PM) followed by a mausoleum side service on Thursday at 11 AM at the D.W. Newcomer Chapel located at 11200 Metcalf in Overland Park, KS.
Jim was born on April 15, 1946 in a doctor's office in Gainesville, Missouri, the son of Fred and Donnie Owens. He came to Kansas City as a boy and graduated from Washington High School in Kansas City, KS. He met and married Karen Harrison on May 21, 1965 and they began a long life together at the ages of 16 and 19, having the wonderful privilege of being blessed with a daughter, Suzanne, and son, John.
Jim accepted Jesus as his Lord as a child and reaffirmed that decision as young family man. He never doubted the promises of God and is now able to claim them as his own. One of his special joys was communicating with people seeking the Lord as an online missionary.
He spent a total of 38 years working for the Santa Fe & Burlington Northern Railroads and has been retired for the past 8 years.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Karen (his special "Dearie"); his daughter Suzanne Menez (Alex), son John (Kathy) as well as two precious grandchildren, Sebastian Menez and Alyssa Owens both of whom he was so proud. He was also blessed with two additional grandchildren, Courtney and Kyle Butler, when John remarried after this first wife's death. He leaves two brothers, Doyle and Jerry, a sister Trisha and their families and Karen's family who became his so many years ago. His parents and his mother in law are waiting and welcome him home to heaven.
In lieu of flowers remembrance donations can be made to either City Union Mission or the Salvation Army as both were dear to his heart.
Our lives will be forever changed but we know we'll be reunited one day. Even so, his prayer was always "Come, Lord Jesus".
