James (Buck) Powell, 97, went to his Father in Heaven February 29, 2008.
He was born in Chester, TX. His father was a cotton and sugar cane farmer who needed him to help on the farm before he graduated from High School. The school principal got him a school custodial job so Buck could hire someone to take his place doing the farm work. He was one of 7 members of the school basketball team and in his senior year they won the Texas State Championship. At age 17 his sister Ruby led him to the Lord in conjunction with a revival Brother Harrington was preaching at the Enon Baptist Church who then baptized him in Clear Creek. He married Annie Watts and they had 2 children, Jeanah and Linda, and lived in Highlands, TX. He worked for the Humble Oil Company, which later was bought by Exxon, eventually becoming a chief tower operator and then later was in charge of building new towers. He served many years as a deacon in the First Baptist Church of Highlands. Annie died in 1984. In 1986 he married Florence Mangham Chandler but she died that same year. He then lived in Kerrville, TX until 2000 when he moved to Overland Park, KS to be near family. Most of the time he lived at Stratford Commons and the residents and staff became like a family to him. He died loving his God, family and friends. He will be buried next to Annie in Chester, TX March 9 with a graveside service with his family. Jeanah Gilman and her husband John and their children and grandchildren, Linda Bryant and her husband Don and their children and grandchildren survive him. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to Freedom Fire (a ministry to inner-city kids he contributed to), P.O. Box 270061, Kansas City, MO 64127
