Dr. James Price

Dr. James Gordon Price, 83, passed away Saturday, October 17, 2009. A celebration of his life will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 24 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64145. James was born in Brush, Colorado on June 20, 1926 to John Hoover and Rachel Laurette (Dobbs). He married Janet Alice McSween on June 19, 1949 and together had four children. James received his Bachelor's degree at the University of Colorado in 1948 and went on to receive his M.D. in 1951. He was an intern at Denver General Hospital from 1951-1952. He practiced medicine, specializing in family medicine from 1952- 1978 in Brush, CO. He was president of the American Academy of Family Physicians in 1973 and President of the American Board of Family Physicians in 1979. He was a charter diplomat for the American Board of Family Practice in 1979. James then went on to become a professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center from 1978-1993 where from 1982-1990 he was Chairman of the Department of Family Practice and from 1990 to 1993 the Executive Dean of the University of Kansas Medical School. He became Prof. Emeritus in family practice in 1993; a member of Institute of Medicine National Academy of Sciences in 1973; Medical Editor of General Learning Corp from 1973-1992; on the Editorial Board of Medical World News from 1969-1979; Editor of American Academy of Family Physician Home Study Self Assessment Program from 1978-1983; wrote the syndicated Scripps-Howard column "Your Family Physician" from 1973-1990. After his retirement from KU, he volunteered at free clinics in Kansas City and on the island of St. Lucia. He served with United States Navy from 1943-1946 and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Omega Alpha. Survivors include his wife, Janet; and four children, James Gordon Price II, Dr. Richard C. Price, Mrs. Douglas Albin (Laurie), Dr. Lynn Price and nine grandchildren and one sister, Dorothy (Bill) Thornsby. (Arr: D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 913-451-1860)
