James Clayton Steadman, age 84, of Overland Park, KS passed away on April 25, 2011. He was born on April 10, 1927 in Orleans, NE the son of Ora Alice (Kennedy) and Alvin Custer Steadman.
After graduating from Orleans High School in 1945, he received orders to report to the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, Illinois, and then stationed at Guam. He volunteered and as Yeoman 3rd class, performed administration duties when assigned to Commander Service Division ELEVEN Staff, which served on USS Ajax (AR-6) during Operation Crossroads, an atmospheric nuclear test series, conducted at Bikini Atoll of the Marshall Islands in July of 1946. He later transferred to USS Bountiful for duty and returned to the United States. He also attained full flying status and was certified with the USAF Aviation Cadets at Randolpf Fields in Texas. He graduated from Nebraska University at Kearney, NE in 1952, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education, with a Major in Mathematics and Minor in Physical Education and Biology. He became a Registered Professional Civil Engineer and Registered Land Surveyor in three states.
He worked as a highway design engineer with HNTB Corporation for 42 years, retiring in 1994. He was active in volunteering for the Johnson County YMCA Tackle Football Program for 5th through 9th graders from 1968-1979 and was a statistician for the Shawnee Mission South High School Football team. He served on the Citizens Advisory Council of Parks and Recreation for Overland Park. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, National Association of Atomic Veterans (WWII), American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans (WWII), and the Abdullah Shrine Temple Legion of Honor, 33rd degree Mason. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening.
He married Marjorie L. Carter on September 3, 1950 in Grand Island, NE. They shared over 60 years together. Survivors include his wife, Marge, of the home; son, Marc (Ramona) Steadman of Medina, MN; daughter, Carrie (Jim) Hultman of Lee’s Summit, MO; grandchildren, Michelle Cordes, Victoria Steadman, Andrew Steadman, Chris Hultman, Courtney Hultman, Chase Steadman, and Hunter Steadman (sons of late Clayton Steadman); sisters, Shirley Wolzen of Grand Island, NE, LaVenna Jackson of Happy, TX and Marilyn Bashford of Manhattan, KS. He was preceded in death by two sons, Kim Steadman in 1980 and Clayton Steadman in 1995; his parents; three brothers, Clinton, Bill and Tracey; two sisters, Virginia Coffey and Jacquelyn Muir.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, May 2, 2011 at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS. Visitation will be held one hour prior at the funeral home. Burial will be held in Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the KS Wildtrust Program.
