Janet Nelson, 78 of Olathe, KS passed away peacefully after a long battle with COPD on December 12, 2012. She was born in Harvey, North Dakota on January 31, 1934 to Albert and Theresa Schmitz. Shortly after graduating from Harvey High School, she married the love of her life, Eugene Nelson of Jamestown, N.D. Their beautiful union lasted 57 years until his passing in June of this year. Janet was a devoted wife and mother, traveling across the globe as Gene was stationed in places such as Guam, Wake Island and Alaska. They finally settled down in Olathe to raise their family, where Janet worked for Allied Signal for 20 years. She was an active member of St. Paul Catholic Church and later Prince of Peace Catholic Church. Janet will be remembered as a loyal friend and a wonderful, loving mother. She led by example, not by words and taught us that life was precious and to be enjoyed.
Janet is survived by her four children; Mike (Nivia), Gene (Peggy), David (Laura) and Julie Harber (Steve). Her legacy lives on in her 17 grandchildren. We invite friends to join us for a memorial service on Friday, December 21st at 12:30 pm at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Olathe, Kansas. Her ashes will be interred at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Kansas City Hospice House.
