Cleta Belle Schweer, age 84 of Prairie Village, Kansas passed away peacefully from natural causes on June 27th at home. Cleta Belle attended the 1st Baptist Church in Shawnee and was a member of the Crusaders Sunday School Class. Cleta was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE).
She was the second daughter of Chris and Emma (Freeland) Peterson and was born on June 7, 1923 on a farm near Horton, Kansas. At an early age the family moved to a farm near Baker, Kansas where she attended her first four years of grade school. The family then moved to a farm near Whiting, Kansas in the Clover Hill neighborhood. It was here that she completed grade school. Cleta Belle then attended and graduated High School in Horton, Kansas with the class of 1941. Thereafter, she attended the Platt-Gard Business University in St. Joseph. After graduating she was employed by the Labrunerie Insurance Company of St. Joseph and then Blish-Mize-Silliman Hardware Company and the Kansas Power and Light Company in Atchison, Kansas.
In 1944 she enlisted in the United States Navy (WAVES). After Boot Camp, she was assigned to the D.C.N.O. Air Office of the Navy in Washington, D.C. and served until 1946 when she was discharged with the rank of Yeoman First Class. After discharge, she moved to Kansas City Missouri and began working for the Veterans Administration and later the Small Business Administration, in the Loan Division. She retired from the BSA in June of 1980 with 36 years of government service, 27 with SBA. Cleta Belle then went to work for the First National Bank and Trust Company, now the Bank of America in Prairie Village, in the Loan Division. For a short time after retiring from the Bank of America, she worked for the John Casablanca Modeling School.
As a young girl, Cleta Belle attended the Methodist church in Horton where she was baptized on Easter Sunday April 9, 1939 by Pastor Merrit W. Faulkner. While attending the Community Christian Church in Kansas City, Missouri she was active in the Young Unmarried Adult Fellowship (YUAF) Sunday School Class where she met and married her Husband, Keith Schweer on June 20, 1963. They purchased a home in Prairie Village. Both she and Keith were active in their Church. On March 18, 1967 they adopted a son, Ross. Cleta Belle was active in the community affairs and served as President of the Prairie Ridge Homes Association for several years. She and her husband volunteered and assisted at her Son?s school and in many Prairie Village activities, most notably, saving the four acre plot of ground adjacent to Harmon Park from private development. With her help the land eventually became Santa Fe Trail Park. Cleta assisted the city in obtaining a federal grant to buy the land and develop it. The land contains the original swale made by the many wagons that crossed it following the Santa Fe Trail.
She was preceded in death by her husband Keith on December 6th, 1995, her parents Chris and Emma Peterson, and her sister Helen. She is survived by her son Ross, wife Amy and two grandchildren Ali and Carter, cousins Glen and Mary Peterson of Whiting, Dorothea Peterson of Horton, Gloria and Gene Holdsworth of Lindsborg, Ruby Lee of Cross Plains, Texas, Bonnie Lee Bachman of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Wanda and Darrell Boudreaux of North Glenn, Co.
