Jean Marie (Schuricht) Seaman, 89, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away July 23, 2020 at Stratford Commons Memory Care Center.
Jean was born January 31, 1931 in Hays, Kansas to George Henry Schuricht and Esther Doris (Mahanna) Schuricht and grew up in Hoxie, KS. She graduated with an education degree from William Jewell College and taught 2 years in her home town high school while her husband, Neil, served in the military. The next 12 years were spent raising the couple’s two sons.
She then re-entered the teaching profession and continued a career that would span 7 decades. She impacted the lives of many students as an elementary school teacher in both the Hickman Mills and Shawnee Mission School Districts (SMS). She earned a Masters Degree from Emporia State University while teaching in the SMS District.
After retiring from the SMS District, she embarked on a second career as a reading specialist in the Longview Community College reading literacy program. Through the literacy program she enabled adults to read who previously had been unable to do so.
Jean is survived by son George Seaman, his wife Tami and his son Zachary; son Jim Seaman, his wife Traci and their sons, Trent and Tyler, and many loved, extended family members and friends.
Jean was married to husband Neil Seaman for almost 68 years until he preceded her in death nearly 3 months ago. As a wife and mother she was devoted to her family. Jean had high expectations for her family as well as her students. She had faith in God and believed regular church attendance as a family was important. She will be missed by both family and former students.
A private family funeral service will be live-streamed at 11:00 am Tuesday, July 28, 2020 from the Johnson County Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in the Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
