JEROME “JERRY” V. PERKINS
Loving husband, caring father and adoring grandfather, Jerry Perkins passed away at home on Thursday, November 29, 2010. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Hilda and Virgil Perkins on April 14, 1939, Jerry grew up in Indianapolis and spent his summers in Canada exploring the outdoors. Later in life he enjoyed winters in Florida with his wife, Ann and family.
Jerry graduated from high school and became a self made man as a software salesman to small and medium sized newspaper publishers across the mid west. He started in the composing room at the Indianapolis Times in the late 1950’s and retired in 2004, recognized by his peers as one of the friendliest and longstanding producers in the industry. Jerry especially enjoyed meeting the small town newspaper publishers and having a cup of coffee with anyone who was interested in learning more about the business.
Jerry married Ann Spencer in 1962 and would have celebrated their 48th anniversary together on December 23. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his father and mother-in-law, Anna and Walter Spencer and his brother-in-law, Walter Troy Spencer. Jerry is survived by his wife, Ann; daughters and son-in-laws, Amy and Keith Copaken of Shawnee Mission, Kansas and Amanda and Doug Maxwell of Carlsbad, California; grandchildren Evan, Jack and Ellie Copaken and Broderick and Sophia Maxwell; and his older sister and brother-in-law Susan and Jack Wilson of Green Valley, Arizona.
Jerry will be remembered by his friends for his reliability, wit, dry humor, sarcasm, the fact that he had two of every tool and his ability to fix things. He will be remembered by his family for his humility, devotion, uncompromising desire to do things right the first time and his five year courageous battle with cancer, in which he fought every step of the way and never complained. But, most importantly he will be remembered by his grandchildren for his glasses that were all too easy to steal from his shirt pocket and his naming of Whirlwind and the Florida chicken.
A private family graveside service will be held in Kansas City. The family would like to thank Dr. Steven Frank and staff at MD Anderson in Houston for their care and compassion during his treatments. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to MD Anderson, Department of Radiation / Oncology, 1220 Holcomb Boulevard, Houston, Texas 77030, Attn: Ron Brazier.
