A sparkling star has faltered, dimmed and left the skies forever. Jerrette Ann (Kulaja) Schrock lost her courageous battle with cancer on December 21, 2012. A 21 year resident of Leawood, KS, Jerrette passed away at home with her family at her side. She fought her cancer battle bravely, with humor and great hope.
Born in Lansing, MI to Jerry & Helen (Powell) Kulaja, Jerrette graduated from Grosse Point High School. She earned her Special Education degree from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo where she met her future husband Daniel Schrock. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and a Sweetheart of Dan's fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon. Following graduation Jerrette taught Special Education students until her first child Kelly was born. Jerrette's care and concern for children led her to CASA where she became an advocate for struggling teenagers. She was awarded CASA Volunteer of the Year for her outstanding efforts. Caring for others was a lifelong endeavor for Jerrette that extended to caring for her elder parents.
For those of us who loved her, Jerrette will forever be remembered for her quick wit, fabulous smile, and generosity of heart, especially for teaching us how to face a catastrophic illness with grace and dignity. We say goodbye to a special mother, grandmother, aunt, a true friend and a loving companion. Our hearts are heavy today, however, we find solace in the knowledge that this world is a better place because Jerrette lived in it…and oh, how beautifully she lived.
Jerrette was preceded in death by her parents, Jerry and Helen Kulaja.
She is survived by her loving husband; Daniel Schrock, her two children; Kelly (Ted) McKee and Dan Jr (Beth) Schrock, grandchildren; Ashley, Matthew, Olivia McKee, and Lexi, Dan III Schrock, sisters; Onna M. Kulaja and Helen (Robert) McMaster, and nephew; Josh McMaster.
