Jerry Robert Greathouse, 84, passed away on December 29, 2016 from complications of Parkinson ’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia. His family was at his side as he peacefully entered eternity.
Jerry was born on June 12, 1932, in Iola, Kansas, to Waco and June Greathouse. He lived in the Kansas City area his whole life except for spending ten years of his retirement at the Lake of the Ozarks. A successful business owner, Jerry owned and operated two wholesale food companies. Jerry and his dad started Reliable Meat Company in 1956, selling wholesale meat products to restaurants all over the Kansas City area for 20 years. The second – Superior Onion Rings – he started with his wife in 1976, selling wholesale fresh and frozen onion rings to restaurants and wholesalers in the Kansas City area. His son joined the business and continued to operate it after Jerry’s retirement in 1996.
Jerry’s kids and grandkids will all tell you how much he enjoyed the lake life --- fishing, boating, swimming, and entertaining. There was always a weekend lake home in his life. Upon retiring in 1996, Jerry and Jan moved to the Lake of the Ozarks where they lived for ten years enjoying all of the things they loved to do. They also were very active in square and round dancing clubs where they made many friends with whom they traveled all across the country to various dance events and fun vacations. He was a very competitive game player – especially any game involving a deck of cards.
Jerry is survived by three children: Pam (Clark) Nungester, Peculiar, Missouri; Mark (Pam) Greathouse, Lenexa, Kansas; Karen (Greg) Jones, Stilwell, Kansas; and three step-children: Teresa (Rex Lizer) Myers, Garnett, Kansas; Mike (Sheila) Patterson, Peculiar, Missouri; Keith (Ginger) Patterson, Linwood, Kansas; 14 grandchildren: and 12 great grandchildren.
