Jerry Thomas “Tom” Penland, 58, of Overland Park, Kansas died Tuesday, February 2, 2010. Memorial services will be 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, February 6, at the Queen of the Holy Rosary, 7023 West 71st Street, Shawnee Mission, KS 66204.
Tom is survived by his daughter Meghan Kathleen, 18 of Prairie Village; twin brother, Terry Timothy, “Tim” Penland, and his wife Sheri of Florissant, Colorado; brother Harry W. Penland of Prairie Village, KS; his nephew, Tom; his nieces Leanna, Joy and Amy; and the mother of his daughter, Teresa Barnard Penland of Prairie Village, Kansas.
Tom was born on January 26, 1952 in Kansas City, Missouri to Kathleen S. and Harry V. Penland. He earned his Associate Degree in Drafting from Johnson County Community College, and then worked for the U .S. Postal Service for 35 years.
Tom loved hiking and camping. He and his brother, Tim, enjoyed years of backpacking trips to Grand Canyon, Lost Creek Wilderness, Ramah Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park in Utah. He was also a talented musician (guitar), artist, and also a gifted athlete. He especially enjoyed golfing, biking, and competing in the MS 150 Bike Ride.
Friends and family enjoyed his wonderful sense of humor and engaging irreverence. He was smart, quick witted, and a devoted father to his daughter. He demonstrated immeasurable loyalty to family and friends. Tom will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
