Jessie Wright

November 10, 1943 — February 13, 2013

Jessie Elizabeth (Libby) Wright who died on Feb. 13, 2013, in Shawnee Mission, KS, was born in Spartanburg, S.C., on Nov. 10, 1943. The daughter of Lawrence and Lorene Bulman Mahaffey, she graduated from Waco High School in Waco, TX, and in pursuing her passion of music, continued her education at and graduated from North Texas State University in Denton, TX. During her college career, she was a member of Mu Phi Alpha, a professional musician's sorority, and performed in over 9 European countries in her college's a cappella choir. For 30 years, she shared her talent and love of music into the church as director of music, and for 10 years, she brought the joy of learning to Bingham Jr. High School students as choir accompanist and assisted with choir sectionals. She retired due to medical reasons, but continued to enjoy her music and often attended area symphony performances, music concerts and sacred music concerts.

She was the wife of Charles William (Bill) Wright, who has been in the motor vehicle parts industry for over 30 years, and graduated from Mid-America Nazarene College. They were completely devoted to each other for over 36 years.

Libby was a member of Summit View Church of the Nazarene, Kansas City, MO, and was the choir director there for many years, as well as the choir director at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Independence, MO. She was involved in the performances of sacred music, solos and choir, at the Hillside Chapel Church of the Nazarene, Colorado Springs, CO, where she was joined in holy matrimony to Bill.

In addition to her very active musical life, Libby had a strong, enduring faith in God, and often expressed her faith musically, through prayer, conversation and attendance at her church. She had a dry sense of humor and sharp wit, as well as a positive and encouraging personality with a contagious laugh, all of which drew others to her.

Libby often communicated her love to her family. Surviving are one daughter, Catherine (Katie) Cariani of Kansas City, MO, and one son, Joseph William (Billy) Cariani of Gardner, KS, with wife, Amy Cariani, and grandchildren, Bryan Cariani of Bakersfield, CA, and Andrew Cariani of Gardner, KS. Surviving also are one sister, Mary Norris of Hampton, VA, and one brother, Dr. James Mahaffey of Harrisonburg, VA.
