Jo Ann Barker

Martha JoAnn Fox Barker, lovingly known as JoAnn, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on January 2, 1938, in Centerville, Tennessee, she lived a full and vibrant life defined by love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to her family, education, and community.

JoAnn is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Barker Jarvis (husband Andy), and her son, William Boyd Barker (wife Heather). She cherished her grandchildren, Taylor and Tracey Jarvis, and Grace and Caleb Barker, who brought immense joy to her life. She is also survived by her sister, Jean Collins Bakkegard (husband Iver), and her brother, Willard Carroll Fox Jr. (wife Debbie). She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Willard and Louise Thompson Fox, and her husband of 64 beautiful years, William Roe Barker.

Jo Ann’s commitment to lifelong learning was inspiring. After earning a certificate in secretarial skills from Miss Hickey’s School of Business in 1960, she dedicated herself to raising her children and supporting her family. At the age of 52, she fulfilled a personal dream by earning a bachelor’s degree in education with a French and Spanish minor, followed by a master’s degree in education.

Her teaching career began in 1987 as a substitute in the Park Hill School District and transitioned to full-time teaching French and Spanish in 1990. For 20 years, JoAnn influenced hundreds—if not thousands—of students, fostering a love of language, culture, and education.

JoAnn also loved coaching and took great pride in mentoring young athletes. She coached her daughter’s elementary school softball team for several years, her son’s elementary school basketball team, and later, the tennis team at Park Hill South High School while teaching there. Her coaching reflected her competitive spirit, dedication, and commitment to shaping the lives of young people both in and outside of the classroom.

If asked what her greatest passion was, JoAnn would have said without hesitation: her family. Her life’s work centered on her loved ones. Adopting her daughter and son was her greatest gift, and she poured her heart into raising them with love, encouragement, and wisdom.

JoAnn also had a deep love for her dogs, who brought her companionship and joy throughout her life. She had many beloved pets, including Toby, Deak, Muffy, Reebok, Abby, and Lily. In her later years, her rescue dog, Kacy, was her pride and joy. Toward the end of her life, JoAnn shared that she had dreams of Lily, who seemed to be guiding her. The hospice chaplain remarked that Lily must be her spiritual guide, offering comfort in her final days.

Gardening was another cherished hobby. Every Mother’s Day, JoAnn gathered her family for an annual flower-planting tradition. Starting with her adult children, this special event grew to include their spouses and grandchildren, becoming a beloved “flower fest.” She found immense joy in watching her garden flourish through the summer and fall, reflecting the beauty she cultivated in all aspects of her life.

JoAnn’s zest for life extended beyond her family. She loved playing bridge and tennis, cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas Jayhawks, and traveling the world. Whether soaking in the sun on a sandy beach, embracing new adventures, or hosting lively gatherings, she brought joy and energy to every moment. Known for her vibrant personality and contagious laughter, she truly was the life of the party.

Her legacy is one of love, determination, and an unshakable spirit. JoAnn’s boundless hope, fierce loyalty, and adventurous nature touched countless lives. She valued education deeply, instilling its importance in her family and students alike. Her fun-loving spirit, unyielding energy, and immense heart will live on in the generations she inspired.

JoAnn’s family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate her incredible life. JoAnn’s Celebration of life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on February 1 at Johnson County Funeral Chapel and Memorial Gardens (https://www.johnsoncountychapel.com). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Friends of Parkville Animal Shelter, www.parkvilleshelter.com, reflecting her lifelong commitment to caring and loving shelter pets and helping them find a forever home.

JoAnn’s memory will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration to those who were blessed to know her.
