Joann Redding, 83, of Kansas City, passed away on January 9, 2008.
She was born in May 1924, in Liberty, Missouri, to Wilma Moseley Gentry and Elston Gentry. She grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and graduated from Florida State Women?s College (now Florida State University) with a Bachelor?s in Social Work in 1946. She was chapter president of the Phi Mu Sorority in college, and continued to be active with Phi Mu and the Panhellenic Society throughout her life. She had a compassionate and giving nature, which showed through her career choices and personal interests. After college, she joined the Red Cross in Jacksonville as a social worker, and continued to work with the Red Cross after moving to Kansas City in 1947. She also worked for the University of Kansas Medical Center for 25 years, first in Child Psychiatry, then in Family Practice. Joann received her Master?s in Social Work in 1953, and her Ph.D. in 1990, both from the University of Kansas. Her devotion to serving others was evident throughout all areas of her life, from her love and commitment to her family to her dedication to the community and unwavering Christian faith. She served as a missionary in India in 1993-94, as a representative of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She also served Country Club Christian Church in numerous leadership roles during her six-decade membership, including a term as chairperson of the Board; outreach council chairperson; deacon; life elder; twice president of Christian Women?s Fellowship; and as a teacher of Sunday school and Bible study classes to countless men, women and children throughout the years. Her love of history and curiosity about other cultures led to a lifetime of travel and learning. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Huguenot Society, National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, National Society United Daughters of 1812, and she served as a docent at the Nelson Gallery for a number of years. She is survived by her daughter, Julia Ann Redding, of Kansas City.

A memorial service will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, January 18, with visitation from 2:00 to 3:00, at Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, Mo.
