Joe Edward Freels, Jr., a longtime resident of Kansas City, Mo., passed away early Saturday, October 31, 2009, after a long illness. Joe was born in Sunbright, Tenn. in 1926. Joe was a WWII veteran, having served in the Navy in the Pacific theater. Joe was a salesman and sales manager for most of his professional career, having worked for a number of funeral homes in the area. Joe is survived by his wife, Naomi; daughter, Margo and son-in-law John of Spring, Texas; son, Mark of Half Moon Bay, Calif.; and son, Brian and daughter- in-law Faye of Nashville, Tenn. He is survived by five grandchildren, Emily, Sasha, Jeremy, Joshua, and Mathew; and one great-grandson, Bryson. Joe is preceded in death by his father and mother, Joe and Lucy Freels, both longtime residents of Morgan County, Tenn. Joe had seven brothers and one sister. He was preceded in death by siblings, J.L. of Livonia, Mich., Charles of Eastpointe, Mich., R.D. and Dudley of Sunbright, and Betty Rodgers of Dayton, Ohio. His surviving brothers include, H.M. of Knoxville, Tenn., Frank of Gallatin, Tenn., and Paul of Hendersonville, Tenn. He is survived by 16 nieces and nephews. Joe will be missed as a husband, father, brother, and friend. Joe was fond of discussions of current events, golf, and family. Joe was an extraordinary man that overcame adversity and was a friend to all, young and old. Joe was an honorable man who cared deeply for his family. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at D. W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kan. Graveside burial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Johnson County Memorial Gardens. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the National Kidney Foundation in his memory.
