Joseph Henry Wythe, 97, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 11, 2015 with his family by his side. Private services were held on October 23, 2015.
Joe was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on November 12, 1917 to Joseph Henry Wythe, Sr. and Elma Kate (McCourtney) Wythe. The family moved to Parsons, Kansas where Joe attended school and graduated from Parsons High School in 1935. He attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque before enlisting in the Army Air Corp. Prior to his enlistment he married Shirley Jane Ruble on February 21, 1942. Joe served his country during World War II in China and India, where he commanded an airfield that supplied the Chinese during the war.
Joe and Shirley resided in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Kansas City, Kansas where they raised six children. As a prolific entrepreneur, Joe started and successfully operated numerous businesses in Kansas City and Oklahoma City including retail stores and a bowling and billiard supply company. He was also a real estate agent, Certified Gemologist, gem appraiser and dealer in Oklahoma City and San Francisco. Through his business ventures he was finally able to fulfill his dream of flying by earning his pilot’s license.
In 1986 he married Jane Holt in Walnut Creek, California. Together they shared their love of travel, visiting resorts around the world.
Joe is survived by five children including Joseph W. (Alicia) Wythe of Brazil, Cree Ann (Chuck) Henderson of Longview, Washington, Shirlee Locker of Midland, Texas, Mirl (Diana) Wythe of Grand Junction, Colorado, Sue (Gus) Locker of Midland, Texas; and two stepsons Peter (Leslie) Holt and Barry Holt, fourteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane, son Richard, sisters Louise McConnell, Mildred Hall, and Pauline Platter.
