John Perry (Jack) Barber, age 87, of Lenexa, started his trip down the long road of no return on February 3, 2018 to join his wife of 66 years who began her trip in January, 2016. (Dad’s own words.)
Jack was born Oct. 23, 1930 in Denver, CO to John R. and Olive M. Barber. The family moved to K.C.K. in early 1934. He graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1948.
A Marine Corps. Veteran of the Korean War, he was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon and four Battle Action Stars on the Korean service medal. He was a lifetime member of the Lenexa VFW and of the Delaware Crossing Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Jack worked in the construction industry; he was a 69-year member of the Carpenters’ Union and a former vice president of Local 168.
He was an ordained elder and life-long member of the Presbyterian Church. He was also a 69-year member of the Westgate 438 Masonic Lodge and the K.C.K. York Rite Bodies.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James R. (Bob) Barber, and sister, Ruth Raw. He is survived by brother, Paul Barber and sister, Edwynna Curry.
He is survived by daughter, Christina Nick of the home; sons, Patrick (Linda) Barber of Shawnee and John Preston (Shelley) Barber of Wichita; also grandchildren Christopher (Molly) Nick and Stephen Nick, Lauren Barber (Laura) and Jamie (Pat) Geraghty, John Perry II (Aleah) Barber and Michael Barber; great grandchildren Tyler and Allie Nick, McCoy and Cassidy Geraghty and John Preston II and Jaxon Barber.
Jack met Betty, the love of his life, while on his way to football practice at KCKJC. He was a loving father and grandfather, who said that one of his favorite pastimes was teaching his children and grandchildren to fish.
The family suggests memorial donations to Olathe Hospice, 15310 S. Marion Street, Olathe KS 66061.
A visitation will be held Friday, February 9th from 6:00-8:00 pm at Johnson County Funeral Chapel. Services will be held Saturday, February 10th from 10:00-11:00 am at Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave. Overland Park KS. Burial to follow at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, 13901 Blackbob Road, Olathe, KS.
