John R. Belden, 78, Overland Park, Kansas, passed away peacefully May 5, 2011 at his home at Tallgrass Creek. He was born May 1st, 1933 in Winfield, KS to Leslie and Vera Belden. John graduated from Winfield High (1951) and Kansas State University in 1955 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. John was joined in marriage to Patricia H. Smith in January 1953. He worked at Black & Veatch for 39 years, retiring in 1994. John spent many years as an active member of Prairie Baptist Church, and served in various roles in the ABCUSA. John enjoyed many mission trips to Asia and Central America. Since moving to Tallgrass Creek, John participated in many activities, the Lifelong Learning Committee being his passion.
John was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Patricia H. Belden, five children: Yvonne Brooks, Julie Bolin, Matt Belden (Quita), Mary Laughlin (Jim) and Ann Davidson (Jim): 18 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; and his siblings: Jerry (Hazel) and Joe (Virginia) Belden and Jan (Gene) Waldorf and many nephews and nieces.
A visitation will be held from 6-8 P.M., Thursday, May 12, 2011 at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, May 13, 2011 at Prairie Baptist Church, 7416 Roe Ave., Prairie Village. A private family entombment will take place in Johnson County Memorial Gardens Indoor Mausoleum.
