John Cobb, 92, of Shawnee, KS died peacefully on Wednesday, March 5, 2014.
He was born Aug. 22, 1921 in Kansas City, MO. He attended Van Horn Grade School and Westport High School, where his gifted art talent flourished. Upon graduation, he was accepted at The Kansas City Art Institute where he studied under Thomas Hart Benton among his many instructors. During his formal art training, John also worked at Hallmark Cards in the Silk Screen Dept.
He enlisted in the Army and served in the 8th Infantry Division during WWII and saw action in Germany where he and his unit earned two Bronze Star's.
Returning to the states, he eventually became Art Director at National Manufacturing, before starting two printing companies of his own.
Throughout most of his life, this talented artist had his works featured in many galleries, exhibitions and art fairs throughout the Kansas City area. For many years, he was selected to show his watercolors at the prestigious Plaza Art Fair.
Besides art and playing golf, he was also an amateur magician and great joke teller. One of John's most satisfying hobbies was paleontology. He and his wife of 43 years, Brenna, would go on many digs around the country returning to Kansas City with box loads of treasured fossils .His family is always first in his heart as he and Brenna have 3 children, (a son and two daughters), 6 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren with one on the way.
The family requests memorial donations be made to the Shriner's Hospitals for Children in care of Abdallah Shrite Temple, 5300 Metcalf Ave., Shawnee Mission, KS. 66202.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons – Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS 66210. Family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m.to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at the Johnson County Chapel.
