DR. JOHN LAWRENCE NIEMAN
June 8, 1928 to June 29, 2010

Dr. John Lawrence Nieman was born on 6-8-1928, the son of Christopher and Marie Nieman of Shawnee, Kansas. Due to the premature death of his mother, he was raised through his high school years by his “Mom”, Sarah Richert of Newton, Kansas. Following his high school graduation, he joined the Navy as a hospital corpsman attached to the 1st and 5th Marine Divisions in Korea and later to the USS Deal.
Following his military service, he graduated from the University of Kansas as a Phi Beta Kappa and a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He graduated from medical school at Case Western Reserve University, and following his residency he practiced Pediatric Medicine in Prairie Village and Overland Park, Kansas for forty years. After three years of additional training, he left pediatrics and began practicing Geriatric Medicine at the Leavenworth VA Medical Center for another fifteen years before retiring in 1999.
He was preceded in death by beloved wife of 46 years, Betty Jean, his parents, his brother Patrick, and his “Mom”. He is survived by three sons and a daughter, John Bruce Nieman and wife Carrie, Mark Nieman and wife Mary, Matthew Nieman and wife Rebecca, and Karen Monk and her husband John, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas on Friday, July 2nd from 6-8 pm. Funeral services will follow on Saturday, July 3rd at 1:00 pm also at the Chapel. Burial will follow at the Johnson County Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Children’s Mercy Hospital in the name of Dr. John Nieman.
