John Lee Smith, 84, of Leawood died on Wednesday, November 16, 2011. A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, Nov. 21, at 3:00 p.m. at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village. Smith, who was born Oct. 7, 1927, in Tulsa, Okla., lived in Topeka, Kan., for more than 20 years. Prior to service in the army, he attended Washburn University, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. During his army service, he was stationed in Manila where he served as Special Agent in the Counter Intelligence Corps.
Upon his return to the United States, he became a sales representative for radio station KTOP in Topeka, while continuing his education at Washburn. Following college, he became Midwest Sales Representative for Capper Publications, publisher of farm publications.
In 1959 he and his business partner, the late Austin Harmon, established Harmon Smith Advertising, an advertising agency located in Kansas City, Mo. In 1969, Smith was elected Councilman for Leawood and was appointed chairman of the city's Planning Commission.
Smith was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Corinth Cemetery Corporation, a member of Kansas City Rotary Club No. 13 (where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow), and a member of Indian Hills Country Club. He also served as a deacon and was a long-time member of Village Presbyterian Church.
Preceding him in death were his first wife, Delores "Lindy" Smith, and his parents, Clara and John R. Smith. He is survived by his wife, Jeannine Wallerstedt Smith, daughter Jane and son-in-law Richard Bartholomew, Overland Park; son and daughter-in-law Steve and Alana Smith and grandchildren Brawner, Tucker, and Georgia Smith, Monument, Colo.; stepson Jim Wallerstedt, Barrego Springs, Calif.; stepdaughter and son-in-law Julie and Ron Roberts of Lenexa, and granddaughters Katie (Brad) Weller, Gardner, and Kristen Abbey, Lenexa; stepdaughter Janna LaRue and grandsons Bobby and Jackson LaRue, Lenexa; and stepbrother-in-law Charles "Bud" Kahn and wife, Judy, Kansas City, Mo.
