Mr. John Urba

JOHN RICHARD URBA

John was born Sept.6, 1917 to Walter and Antonina Urba in East Orange, NJ and died at St Luke's South Hospital on June 12, 2013.

During John's 48 year career with Western Electric Co. he worked at their locations in Kearny, NJ, No. Andover, Ma., coming to the Lee's Summit plant when it opened in 1960.

In 1940 John married his high school sweetheart, Gertrude Cody with whom he spent 62 happy years until her death in 2002. A private pilot since 1942 John spent much of his retirement as a flight instructor at KCH at Jo. Co. Executive Airport. He taught hundreds of students to fly including the children of earlier students. He had both a pilot and instructor license until his late 80's. Also an avid golfer in retirement he played several times a week through his early 90's. He was quite proud of his hole in one.

John loved spending time with his family, was very proud of his grandchildren and was thrilled to see his 6 great grandchildren. In 2004 he married Joyce Pinkerton who survives him.

He will be forever missed by his daughter, Linda Helling of Overland Park, his grandchildren Tiffany Young (Brian) of Overland Park and Thomas Helling, Jr. M.D. (Kristen) of Lawrence. His 6 great grandchildren, Jack, Noah, and Luke Young an Campbell, Charlotte, and Thomas Helling III. John is also survived by his brother Richard Urba of Wayne, NJ and 5 nieces and nephews.

John was predeceased by his brother, Charles Urba and his great grandson, Nicholas Helling.

A founding member of the Church of the Nativity, a funeral mass will be held 10:30 am Saturday, June 15, 2013 at Church of the Nativity, 3800 W. 119th, Shawnee Mission, KS 66209. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS 66210. Donations may be made to Angel Flight, 1515 E. 71st St, ste. 312, Tulsa, OK 74136.
