John Paul Laughrey was born July 31, 1940 in Rahway, New Jersey, the only child of Paul W. and Margaret S. Laughrey.
His early years were lived in the Mississippi river town of Louisiana, MO. In 1953, he moved to Overland Park, KS and graduated from Shawnee Mission High School in 1958. He received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from William Jewell College in 1962 and a master’s degree in 1964 in clinical psychology from UMKC.
John married the love and soulmate of his life, Linda L. Stacy, in 1962. Three children came from this union: John II, Stacy, and Rick.
As a pilot for TWA for 32 years, John flew the Boeing 707, 727 and 767. Four of those years were as a simulator instructor on the Boeing 727 and 767.
John was the Author of a book entitled “From Milk to Meat”, published in 1997. He wrote this book for the purpose of helping new Christians grow in their faith. He was a Sunday School teacher for over 25 years and became a certified minister with the Assemblies of God. He also enjoyed leading Bible studies and small groups. His goal in life was to help others on their spiritual journey as he continued to grow in his own walk. John had been a strong believer in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior since leap day, February 29, 1972.
John was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Linda, children; John II (Angela), Rick (Lori) and Stacy (Lon) Wright. Also, seven grandchildren; Christopher Wright, Samantha Ruiz (Jeremy), Danielle Laughrey, John Laughrey III, Harrison Wright, Nicholas Laughrey and Laiken Laughrey.
A visitation will be held Saturday, August 7, 2021, from 9:00 am – 11:00 am, followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 am at Grace Church 8500 West 159th St., Overland Park, KS 66223. Inurnment will follow services at 1:00 pm at Johnson County Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park.
