Jon Gjovig, 78, passed away December 28, 2015. Jon was born in Dodge City, Kansas on December 9, 1937, to Maurice and Margaret Gjovig. He grew up in Dodge City, Mission, Kansas, and was a graduate of Shawnee Mission High School. He graduated from Kansas University, where he was a member of Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity. He graduated from college as a First Lieutenant through the Air Force ROTC program, with his pilot’s license.
He was united in marriage to Lois Tolbert on June 19, 1960 in Topeka, KS.
Jon served 5 years as a pilot in the USAF, for his final assignment as a Captain, he was stationed in the Philippines. He flew the HU-16 amphibian airplane with Air Rescue Service for downed aircraft, earning several medals for crew rescues. From October 1965 through May 1991, Jon was a pilot for TWA. The family shared many wonderful trips through his employment.
Family, friends, sports, and traveling were important to Jon. After retirement, he was really busy with golf, investments, and his grandchildren. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed watching their sporting events, dance recitals, and their many music concerts.
Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Margaret Gjovig; a stepmother, Virginia Gjovig; and his son Damon Gjovig.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lois; his sister, JeRue Dixon of Vestal, New York; his son, Derek (Lori); grandchildren, Katy, Kristin, Hunter, and Kara Gjovig of Olathe, KS. He also leaves many friends, nieces, nephews, and cousins. His jokes and sense of humor will be missed.
A visitation will be held Monday January 4, 2016 from 10am-11am, with the service beginning at 11am, followed by a luncheon, all at the Salvation Army Olathe Corps & Worship Center, 420 E. Santa Fe, Olathe, KS 66061. There will be a graveside at 2:30PM, following the luncheon, at Johnson County Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS 66210.
