Captain Jon Lewell Spies, 71, passed away Dec 24, 2013 at his Overland Park home. Jon was born in Marshalltown, Iowa on July 23, 1942, the son of F. Lewell and Ruth Spies.
Jon grew up in Leawood and graduated from Shawnee Mission East in 1960. He was an Eagle Scout and spent a year as a foreign exchange student in Switzerland with the International Christian Youth Exchange. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1965, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. An accomplished singer, pianist, and cellist, he was active with his fraternity in Rock Chalk Revue. Jon was a Distinguished Graduate of the US Air Force Office Training School and served in Japan and Washington State. After his military service, he worked in human resources, holding senior positions in organizations such as Suhor Industries, Associated Wholesale Grocers, Beatrice Foods, and Petro Lewis.
Jon was preceded in death by his son, Wade. He is survived by his daughter Dianne Paukstelis, her husband Peter, and their sons Nicolas and Nathan.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, January 3 at DW Newcomers and Sons - Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS 66210. Private burial is taking place.
