Joseph Ellingsworth, 74, of Overland Park, KS passed away Thursday, December 3, 2015. Joe was born on June 27, 1941 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Joseph F. Ellingsworth and Amelda (Gahan). Raised in Philadelphia, Joe would enlist in the United States Army at the age of 16. As an Army Sharpshooter in 1958, he was stationed with the 1st Armored Rifle Battalion of the 41st Infantry at Fort Hood, TX. He was sent to Germany and held a final post at Fort Ord, California. It is while he was stationed at Fort Ord in 1960 that Joe would meet Lana J. Otto. On April 23rd of 1962, Joe and Lana married and began their more than 50 year life together. After an honorable discharge from the Army Joe and Lana would move back to Joe’s native Philadelphia where he began work with the United States Post Office. In 1964 they returned to Pacific Grove, CA where Joe continued with the post office. Shortly after their move Joe left the post office and began as a driver with UPS. After 15 years with UPS and numerous leadership positions, Joe and Lana relocated their family to Missouri where Joe would obtain a real estate license. During the mid 80’s Joe and Lana purchased their home in Buckingham Estates where Joe spent many years selling and developing property. In 2014 Joe finally retired from real estate. He had been working with Reece and Nichols out of their Leawood offices.
Joe was the kind of man that never knew a stranger. Larger than life, Joe loved and cherished his family. He will be forever missed and remembered by all who knew him. Joe is survived by his loving wife Lana. Their son Anthony Thomas Ellingsworth; daughter Kimberly Jo Perez and her husband Raymund; one sister Kathleen Ellingsworth; 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation service for Joe on Tuesday, December 8th, from 4-7PM at Johnson County Funeral Chapel & Memorial Gardens 11200 Metcalf Ave. Overland Park, KS 66210. One of Joe's favorite pastimes was collecting gifts for families for the Red Bag Program for Reece and Nichols for the Holidays. In recent years Joe’s health kept him from this noble charity. In honor of Joe and in lieu of flowers, his family is asking that you donate a new unwrapped toy in his memory. Johnson County Funeral Chapel is a Toys for Tots drop off site. You are welcome to bring your donation to Joe’s service or drop it off anytime during normal business hours.
