Joyce Elizabeth Lindsay-Hofstra, was born December 15, 1943 in Kansas City, Missouri as the only child to the late Lincoln Lindsay and Otiltia Lindsay-Reed.
She was married on May 21, 1966, to Gary R. Hofstra of Leavenworth, Kansas. They made their home on her mother’s farmstead in Shawnee (formerly DeSoto), and to this union three daughters and a son were born, Kiki Lee Hofstra on January 29, 1969, Karen Ann Hofstra on November 25, 1970, Kara Lee Hofstra on September 7, 1975 and Mark Anthony Hofstra on March 23, 1982. She lived in Shawnee with her beloved family until moving to Louisburg, Kansas in April of 1997.
Joyce loved spending time with all of her grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to see them. She had a generous heart and would do anything to help those in need. She loved her church, Shawnee First Baptist, and especially going on Mission Trips to build homes and churches in Mexico and in Europe. Her passion was Missionary work and telling others about Jesus.
Last August, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer and bravely went through chemo and radiation treatments through March of this year. It wasn’t clear how aggressive her cancer was until April and she remained strong and prayerful until God called her home.
She is survived by her husband, Gary Hofstra of Louisburg, Kansas. Three daughters, Kiki Heck and her husband Adam of Ottawa, Kansas, Karen Heller and her husband Shawn of Olathe, Kansas, Kara Russell and her husband David, of Olathe, Kansas and also her son, Mark Hofstra of Overland Park, Kansas. She also leaves her nine grandchildren, Justin and Rebecca Gladman, Will and Nate Heller, Colton, Noah and Hope Russell, and Josh and Jon Heck.
