Judith Smalley

Judith “Judy” Ann (Gates) Smalley peacefully passed on August 5, 2010, in Overland Park, KS. She was 75. Judy was born on November 27, 1934, in Topeka, KS. She was the daughter of Charles and Flora Seville Gates. Both of her brothers, John and David Gates, preceded Judy in death.

In 1948, Judy moved from Emporia, KS, to Argentine, KS. She graduated from Argentine High School in 1953 and married her high school sweetheart, Reed Smalley, in January1955. They recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in Venice, FL.

Judy worked from 1954-1960 at Home Federal Savings in Kansas City, MO. Judy worked at Hallmark Cards before moving on to Home Federal Savings in downtown Kansas City, Mo., in 1954. Judy was a regular T.V. commercial spokes person for Home Federal Savings until 1960. From 1960-65, the couple lived in Pensacola, FL, and then to Norfolk, VA, and returned to Overland Park in 1965.

Judy loved to travel, read, and was actively involved in the Wycliff Gourmet Club. From 1984 to 1990, Judy worked for Iliff Company Realtors. She had many friends in Kansas and Venice, FL, where they visited every winter.

Judy will be greatly missed by her husband, Reed, her son Scott Smalley (Tucson, AZ), and daughters Jill (Mike) Cragg (Mt. Pleasant, SC) and Jennifer (Doug) Skivers (Louisburg, KS). She leaves behind four grand-children, Mackie and Gracie Skivers, John and Katherine Cragg, and one step-grandchild, Victoria Cragg, as well as two nephews and a niece.

A Graveside Service will be 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 12th in Johnson County Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. A Celebration of Life Reception will be held at 1:30 P.M. Thursday at the family home, following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Judy’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association – Heart of America Chapter - is appreciated.
