Julio Lopez, 90, of Overland Park, Kansas, died Monday, June 22, 2009.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 26, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf. Friends may call on the family one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Burial in Johnson County Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to Lawrence Community Shelter, 214 W. 10th St., Lawrence, KS 66044.
Julio was born December 20, 1918, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He was raised in Turner, Kansas. He attended and graduated from Turner High School in 1939. Julio entered the U.S. Sixth Army in 1941 and was honorably discharged in 1943. Julio married Angelina Bazan in September 13, 1947, and the couple remained married for 62 years; Angelina survived him. Two sons were born of their union. Julio worked for the Rock Island Railroad from 1947 until his retirement in 1980. He was a union member for all of his time with the railroad in the Brotherhood Railway Carman Association and served as a union steward. The family attended the Church of the Good Shepherd in Kansas City, Missouri; Julio was a member of vestry for several years. Julio helped his sons obtain advance degrees.
Julio is survived by his two sons, William and Dianne, his wife, and James and Susan, his wife. Julio is also survived by his two loving granddaughters, Adrienne M. Marquis and Peter, her husband, and Helena K. Lopez. (Arr.: DW Newcomer's Sons 913-451-1860.)
