Karen Copenhafer

Karen Copenhafer, 68, of Leawood, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, March 23, 2009 at Menorah Medical Center after having experienced several strokes over the last two years.

A visitation of friends and family will be held 2:00- 4:00 p.m., Saturday, March 28, 2009 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf.

Karen was born to Madeline and William Gilbert on September 13, 1940 in St. Joseph, Missouri. She attended St. Joseph public schools, graduated from Benton High School in 1958 and obtained an Associate's Degree from St. Joseph Junior College while employed part time in the laboratory at Missouri Methodist Hospital. Karen married Wilber Copenhafer on December 19, 1959 at the King Hill Baptist Church in St. Joseph. They attended Kansas State University until 1961, when they moved to Kansas City, Missouri. Upon moving to Kansas City, Karen received training and employment as a Registered Medical Technologist at Research Hospital until she retired in 1988.

Survivors include her husband, Wilber, of the home; her daughter and son-in- law, Lori and Steve Barrett, Shawnee; her mother Madeline Utinske, Shawnee; her sister Linda Romanelli, Des Moines, Iowa; granddaughter Kelsey Barrett, Shawnee; and grandsons Trey Wheeler, Overland Park; Daniel Barrett, Austin, Texas; John Barrett, Fort Collins, Colorado; and David Barrett, Lawrence, Kansas.
