Kitty W. Johnson, of Overland Park, KS, passed away on Tuesday, January 17,2017, after suffering for many years from Alzheimer’s, at the age of 92. Kitty Margaret Waddey was born on June 23, 1924 in Williamson County, TN. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Kate Waddey, Brother, Richard Frank Waddey and her husband of 48 years, Horace (Sonny) L. Johnson, Jr. She is survived by her brother, Ira (Jack) (Ann) C. Waddey, Jr. of Nashville, TN., children, Sandy (Jim) Howland of San Diego, CA., Patty (Vincent) Vigorita of Amagansett, NY and Kathy Richey of Overland Park, KS., nine grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Kitty attended Tennessee Tech where she met her future husband. They married in Oceanside, CA on October 21, 1944 before Horace shipped out to serve as a Marine in WW II. After serving in WW II and Korea (where he reached the rank of Captain), he began his long career with A T & T which required moving the family almost every year for over a decade. The family finally settled into their home in Overland Park, KS in April, 1963. A very important part of her life was her involvement as an active member of Leawood United Methodist Church where she made many lifelong friends. Over the years, she taught bridge to many beginning and intermediate bridge players as well as becoming a Gold Life Master bridge player herself. She and Horace enjoyed playing golf, attending all the many sports activities of their children and grandchildren and at the age of 70, she took up the game of tennis which she loved to play until she was 88. Kitty was seldom idle - she knitted, baked bread, sewed matching pajamas for all the kids and grandkids, made incredible homemade peanut brittle (friends & family received this special treat each Christmas), volunteered for many worthy causes and loved to go on walks and visit her large family as often as possible.
A celebration of life will be held at Leawood United Methodist Church located at 2915 W 95th Street, Leawood, KS on February 12, 2017 at noon followed by a reception.
