Larry R. Kilgore, a lifetime resident of Kansas City, Missouri passed away Thursday, November,
19th at St. Joseph Medical Center at the age of 64.
Larry was born in Kansas City in 1956 to Mary Jane and John (Jack) Kilgore. He graduated
from Bishop Hogan High School in 1974. He quickly gained employment at Kansas City Public
Works. He ultimately transferred to KC Parks and Recreation and served the city for 34 years
before retiring as a Principal Engineering Technician in 2010. After retirement, he spent time
operating Kilgore Lawn and Landscape as both a landscaping and snow removal service.
Larry was preceded in death by brothers (John, Bill, and Chris), as well as his parents Mary
Jane Kilgore and Jack Kilgore. He is survived in death by his long time partner Julie Akers. Two
daughters, Amie (Aaron) Tompkins and Stephanie (Vern) Peterson. His favorite role in life was
being the best Grampy to his four grandchildren, Neeva Tompkins, Aubrey Peterson, Rubie
Tompkins, and Adam Peterson. Larry leaves many other beloved family members including his
brother, David (Vickie), sisters Tiffany (Bill) and Angela (Court), and his ex-wife Sherri whom he
remained close as they raised a family together and shared the joy of being grandparents. Larry
made everyone smile. He leaves behind many cousins, dear friends, and an enormous amount
of nieces and nephews, as he was affectionately known as Uncle Larry to many loved ones in
his family and Julie’s alike.
Larry lived his life to the fullest; always happy and making others laugh. He loved cruises and
road trips across the country (the closer to Las Vegas the better). He spent many weekends not
only watching but also driving race cars and motorcycles at KCIR. Larry enjoyed years of
playing in pool leagues both as a way to perfect his game and to socialize (the man lived to joke
and tell stories) and he made many decade long friendships with his teammates. He enjoyed
spending time at the Lake of the Ozarks: fishing, skiing, boating, or eating dinner at his favorite
restaurant, Tres Hombres. But his favorite activity of all was spending time with his four
grandchildren, as they were truly the light of his life. Larry will be deeply missed by his family,
friends, and all who knew him.
