Larry Lockwood, 81, of Overland Park, passed away on October 22, 2017 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center after battling cancer for many years. Some may not have known the magnitude of his battle with cancer because he was determined not to let anything keep him down. His humor, optimism, and faith gave him the courage to not let life's obstacles change his outlook on life.
Larry, the second of five siblings, was born March 8, 1936, on a farm near Larrabee, Iowa. His work ethic began with a paper route when he was a boy, and at just 14, he started working construction, saving every penny he earned to put himself through college. In 1961, he earned his degree in Architectural Design from Iowa State University, where, through the ISU Greek system he met his wife Dallas Johnson. They were married in 1960, moving to the Kansas City area shortly after.
Larry practiced out of his own architectural firm in Overland Park since the 1970s. He had his hand in many commercial buildings across the country: shopping centers, hotels, schools, banks, medical buildings, churches, and many residential homes, even working in his last days from his hospital bed at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
Larry was kind, honest, and a very humble man who loved watching all sports. There were not many ISU football and basketball, Kansas City Royals or Chiefs games that he missed, but what he loved more than anything was having his family around him, giving of himself through his hard work and talents to his wife, three daughters, sons-in-law, and 12 grandchildren. He also maintained a close relationship with his siblings and cousins, gathering with them frequently over the years. He gave with joy and an infectious smile.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Luella Lockwood. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dallas; his 4 siblings: Stan Lockwood, Joanne Kruse (Larry), Karen Egger (Darrell), and David Lockwood (Cyndy); his children: Shawn Fowler (Dave), Tara Gartin (Tim), Dayna Cooley (Kelly); and his grandchildren: Ashlyn Posladek (Matt), Mitchell, and Nicholas Fowler, Nathan, Peter, Elizabeth, and Joshua Gartin; and Justin, Carlie, Courtney, Jason, and Derrik Cooley.
