Larry L. Palmquist, age 68, died June 7, 2009 following an illness of COPD (lung disease). Larry was born June 1, 1941 in Concordia, Kansas. He was the son of Francis Reynold and Nellie Pearl (Johnson) Palmquist. He grew up in Concordia and graduated from Concordia High School in 1959. He was baptized in the Methodist Church at Concordia, KS on April 14, 1946 along with his niece, Brenda (Palmquist) Smith. He was married to Linda Lee Price on August 16, 1959 at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Concordia, KS. Larry & Linda were high school sweethearts and in the same class of 1959. Their lives evidenced a 50 year love affair. They worked together in every career they undertook.
Larry started his career selling auto parts for Regnier Automotive in Concordia, KS. He was successful at sales and later branched out into sales of auto equipment and tow trucks. He was part owner and general manager of Colorado Auto Service in Englewood, CO. He was hired by the Ernest Holmes Company, Chattanooga, TN in 1969 as a factory representative. Larry spent the next 18 years setting up distribution, training salesmen & selling Ernest Holmes wreckers. He traveled 9 western states and lived in Littleton, CO. He transferred to and traveled the Kansas territory for much of the 18 years. He purchased Stanley Equipment Company in 1981. He operated the lawn & garden dealership on the corner of 151st and Metcalf for the next 18 years. He sold the business in June of 1999. He then purchased a small shopping center, Orchards Corner I and II, in Lawrence, KS, located at 15th & Kasold. He managed the leasing and operations of the shopping centers until now.
Larry was a charter member of Olathe Presbyterian Church of America in Olathe, KS. He was active in the First Baptist Church of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico helping to distribute rice and beans to the poor and attending the men's and also the couples bible studies. He was a Christian who set an example for others to follow. He was a generous and giving person. He was a devoted husband and father and was dearly loved by his family and friends. Larry was a visionary person who supported all of us with his motivation and guided us with his competent leadership.
He loved to fish the Bay of Banderas in Puerto Vallarta and spent many enjoyable days on the Karina Dos with Chili Verde. Winters were enjoyed in Mexico where they had a home on the Bay of Banderas in Bucerias, Mexico. He made many trips to Canada with his friends to fish the lakes there. His passion was collecting automatic musical instruments and especially reproducing player pianos. His Steinway Grand reproducing piano was his pride and joy.
In 1978, he and Linda welcomed and later adopted three sibling brothers, Ramon, Daniel, and Michael from the Philippines. In 1982, they added a daughter, Leeca to their family, by adoption. Larry had a deep caring and compassion for all people that he came in contact with. He never lost his ability to relate to people on their terms and on their level.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Francis & Nellie Palmquist and his only sibling, his brother, Lowell Oscar who was 22 years older than he. He is survived by his wife, Linda Palmquist, his life partner & best friend. Their love and commitment to each other was evident to all. He is survived by 7 children: Lisa Hartman of Summerfield, FL, Lynette Bins of Arvada, CO, Lana Palmquist of Prairie Village, KS, Leeca Goode of Stilwell, KS, Ramon Palmquist of Redwood City, CA, Daniel and Michael Palmquist, both of Overland Park, KS. His son-in-laws are: Thomas Hartman, Michael Bins, & Donald Goode. He has the following grandchildren: Elizabeth Deems, Matthew, William, & Seth Bins, Donald, Maxwell, Joclyn, & Sophie Goode. His step-mother is Helen Price of Houston, TX. He has three nieces: Brenda-now Mrs. David Smith of Scottsville, KS, Patricia-now Mrs. Phil Pfister of Greer, SC, Jayne-now Mrs. Lyle Tinkler of Bennington, KS & their families. He leaves his Mexican son, Jesus Montoya and cousins from QTO, Mexico, Ron & Shigeyo Kirkpatrick and their son Morgan Kirkpatrick from St. Louis, MO. He also leaves his special minister and mentor, Don Powell who has been his teacher in his Christian walk with the Lord. In religion, he was a Protestant, in politics, A Republican, in church preference, a Presbyterian. Ever loyal to his church and friends. A very kind husband and father, and a generous neighbor. A good man has passed away and will be missed by all.

A gathering of family and friends will be held 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 11th at D. W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, Kansas. A celebration of Larry’s life will be 4:30 p.m. Friday, June 12th at The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, 13720 Roe Avenue, Leawood, Kansas. Burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia, Kansas final date to be determined.
