Laurence E. Hanna, 96, of Overland Park, KS, peacefully passed away on October 27, 2018 at Kansas City Hospice, surrounded by his family. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, Wesley Chapel, 13720 Roe Ave., Leawood, KS from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Cemetery, Raytown, MO.
Laurence was born on January 13, 1922 to Oscar and Pearl Cooper Hanna in Hennessey, Oklahoma. He graduated from Hennessey High School in 1939 and attended Oklahoma A&M College. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in 1943. Laurence spent three and a half years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during WWII, in the Pacific Theater of Operation. He was discharged as a Captain.
Laurence was employed by Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company for 38 years. He retired as Senior Vice President and Chief Engineer in 1984. After he retired, he was active as a consultant in the oil and gas business. Most of his career was involved with the engineering and operation of facilities in the oil and gas industry.
During his career Laurence was a member of the American Gas Association where he was associated with the Pipeline Research Committee, serving as chairman from 1978-1980. He was also a member of the American Petroleum Institute from 1980 to 1983. He was a United States representative on the International Gas Union.
Laurence was a previous member of the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Baker University from 1986-1990. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection and the Morning Star Sunday School Class.
A devoted father and grandfather, survivors include his children, The Rev. James Hanna (Lynn) of Waynesville, N.C., Becky Lee (Jim), of Glastonbury, Ct., and Sandra Buntin (Louis) of Paola, KS; five grandchildren, David Hanna, Rachel Crawford (Tristan), Jennifer Lee, Kathryn Genest (Erik), and Brian Buntin.
