Leon Charles Johnson 81, died Sunday January 14, 2007 at his home in Overland Park, KS. He was born December 27, 1925 in Clay Center, KS, the son of Joe H. and Hilda (Moden) Johnson. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Mart of Derby, KS and Delores Tindall of Palmdale, CA.
Leon grew up in Clay Center and attended grade school and high school there. In 1944, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in New Guinea, Admiralty Islands and the Philippine Islands. He was honorably discharged in 1946. In 1947 he was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. He worked for Bell for 38 years retiring in 1985. Thirty of those years were spent in management in Salina, Manhattan, Topeka and Kansas City, Kansas.
In 1948, Leon married Avis Cyr, of Miltonvale, KS. He is survived by Avis, his wife of 58 years, one sister Betty Chestnut of Clay Center, KS, his five daughters, Elaine (Clyde) Baysinger, Lane, KS, Debby (Joe) Schmidtberger, Lawrence, KS, Jolene Lynn (Tom), Kansas City, MO, Cathy (Warren) Rudd, Merriam, KS, and Sandra Pierce of Springfield, MO, 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Leon was active in Turner Lions Club and served as President in 1973 and 1975. He served one year as Zone Chairman and District Governor of the Kansas City area.
The family requests no flowers. Donations may be made to Saint Luke?s Hospice 3100 Broadway Suite 300, Kansas City, MO 64111. Services will be held 12:00 PM Thursday January 18 at D.W. Newcomer?s Sons Johnson County Chapel 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park. Burial with full military honors will follow at Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
