LETA J. FITTS 88, Overland Park, KS passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2012.
She was born December 22, 1923 in Clinton, Iowa the daughter of William John and Nettie (La Grange) Yourd. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1942 where she was a National Honor Society Member. In 1946, she earned a Bachelor's degree from Coe College at Cedar Rapids, Iowa and later became a Physical Education Teacher in New Hampton, Iowa.
Leta was united in marriage to Orvis N. Fitts on November 26, 1948 in Clinton, Iowa. They shared over sixty-three years of marriage. They lived in New Hampton, IA; Storm Lake, IA; Mason City, IA; Des Moines, IA; Omaha, NE before moving to Overland Park, KS in 1966.
She was a member of the Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church, Chancel Choir, an Elder on the Session, moderator of the Women's Association, and Circle Leader; P.E.O. member and was initiated in 1945, she was past president of Chapter GB; She organized a bridge group at Rolling Hill Church, played duplicate bridge 40 years, contract bridge 60 years, taught bridge and attained the rank of Master with the American Contract Bridge League. She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority at Coe College. In her adult life she enjoyed bowling and golf.
Mrs. Fitts was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Dr. John La Grange Yourd. She is survived by her husband; a son, Gregory Fitts and wife, Barbara Anne of Des Moines, IA; two daughters, Barbara Fitts Lange of Raytown, MO and Allison Schmitz and her husband, Nick of Olathe, KS; six grandchildren, Jason Fitts and wife, Olivia of Olathe, KS, Carrie Fitts of Des Moines, IA, Damon Lange of Moreno Valley, CA, Jeramy Lange of Independence, MO, Brittney Schmitz of Olathe, KS and Courtney Schmitz of Olathe, KS; and four great-grandchildren, Faith Alexa Fitts, Lucia Lange, Shelton and Shelby Fitts; her sister, Loretta Ring of St. Paul, MN; and a neice, Joan Cook of Kirkwood, MO.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at the Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church, 9300 Nall Ave., Overland Park, KS. Inurnment will follow at Johnson County Memorial Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church, or American Heart Association.
