Lloyd "Larry" Lavely, 81, Leawood, KS, passed away Tuesday May 12, 2015. Funeral services will be held Friday May 15, 2015 at 10:00 AM at Overland Park Christian Church. Visitation will be held prior to the service at 9:00 AM. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri. Family suggests contributions be made to Overland Park Christian Church or the Salvation Army.
Lloyd was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Ruth (Jackson) Lavely and Lloyd Laurence Lavely, Sr. on July 30, 1933. He lived in Johnson County, Kansas for over fourty years. Lloyd's family also lived in New York, Tennessee and Texas.
He retired from Black & Veatch in August 2002. He received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from The University of Kansas in 1956. He held various management positions in engineering, sales and marketing with four major U.S. companies doing business internationally. Lloyd traveled as far as Poland, Turkey, and China throughout his career. He has also traveled to all 50 states and most of the Canadian provinces. During his 46-year professional career, Lloyd made several inventions, four of which were granted U.S patents. In 1996 he co-authored the Power Plant Atmospheric Emissions Control chapter in Black & Veatch's Power Plant Engineering textbook. Most of his career and inventions were related to improving the air, water or solid waste emission to the environment.
Lloyd was involved in community service in Kansas. He started serving the homeless and low-income people in Johnson County in 1992 in what became the Salvation Army's Johnson County Family Lodge. He was Chairman of the Lodge's Advisory Committee when it opened in 1995. Lloyd was an elder at the Overland Park Christian Church and has served on its Outreach Commission for over 15 years, two years as Chairman, and was a member on the church's Board of Directors.
In 2000, he became interested in the Turner House, which serves children and youth in Northeast Wyandotte County where he served on it's board of managers. He was also an active member in the Overland Park Lions Club, which primarily serves the visually impaired but also raises funds for the Salvation Army. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop #46. He was a member of the Mic-O-Say tribe and took his resolutions with H. Roe Bartle. He later advanced to warrior with his grandson, Adam, and daughter Lisa.
He and his wife, Audrey, recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. Lloyd is survived by his wife Audrey (Galbreath) Lavely, three children; Lisa L. Metcalf (Bill), Larry M. Lavely, and W. Spencer Lavely (Penny), four grandchildren; Andrea, Jason, Adam, Emily and great-grandson, Jacob.
